What to Do with Regrets

Sometimes there’s things we’ve done that we wish we hadn’t. Or things happen that are out of our control.

What can we do?

While we cannot change the past, we can take a look to see the part we  played in it.

How were we responsible?

What can we learn from our experience?

These are valuable and practical questions.

What is not practical is developing anxiety or worry about things that we cannot change. Or defining ourselves by past actions that have nothing to do with who we are at our core.

As the Serenity Prayer says,

‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’

When we’ve determined that there’s nothing we can do about a situation, the wisest thing is to forgive ourselves, learn from it, and put it in an empowering context so that it doesn’t hold us back.

So that it pushes us forward into the future we want to create.
